HP Ultrium media is exhaustively qualified for use with HP and non-HP Ultrium products. A continuous testing program in HP's media laboratory guarantees the high levels of quality uniquely specified by Hewlett-Packard. HP has 20 custom-built test chambers in use around the clock. 70,000 tests and 1.3 million test hours a year emulate real-world environmental conditions and usage. This testing ensures that every tape works reliably the first and every time it is loaded into a drive.

Increased margin between Early Warning End of Media (EWEOM) and End of Media (EOM), which means data on a full tape will fit on to the destination tape when copying tapes. Smoother basefilm and smaller magnetic particles increase bit density, allowing more data in the same amount of tape. This increases the number of recording tracks from 512 for Ultrium 2, to 706 for third generation HP Ultrium 800GB cartridges. HP warrants Ultrium 800GB RW cartridges for up to 30 years archival life and/or 260 full back ups. This ensures businesses can meet the ever increasing demands of regulation for data retention and archiving.
